The Rose Cottage was one of the first fifty homes built in Orange in 1894. The Rose Cottage was commissioned to be built for a woman, which is highly unusual for the time.
In the two centuries it has existed, The Rose Cottage has changed from being a family home to becoming a place of business.
According to the chain of title, the second owner of the house was Adolphina Guenther, who is pictured standing to the right.
Ms. Guenther came to Orange from Fort Dodge, Iowa and purchased the home in 1904.
The Historic District of Old Towne Orange became known as the Plaza. The city of Orange was incorporated in 1888, and the Plaza still has the small town feel that unified its inhabitants over 100 years ago.
Old Towne Orange is one square mile with borders on Walnut and La Veta, and Batavia and Cambridge. The stunning fountain and circle are at the heart of the Plaza where Glassell Street and Chapman Avenue intersects.
The Plaza contains many of the original structures that give it the Old Towne charm.
Old Towne Orange is unique because the one square mile contains remarkable examples of vintage buildings that include businesses, homes, churches, schools, Chapman University, a train depot, the Hilbert Museum, packing houses, lofts, and parks.
